Alaskan singer/songwriter Emma Hill and her co-writer/musician Bryan Daste have quickly made a massive impact with their alt/folk songs and their penchant for touching upon the deepest, most universal of subjects. They’ve been compared to Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, and their fourth album proves they’re not just a one-off, fly-by-night duo. Hill easily exudes that wild, adventurous style that only a true Alaskan can. There’s not a cut on here that doesn’t hit the nail right on the head. Hill’s voice is clear, strong and fierce, her lyrics to-the-bone, while Daste and company bring a tough yet gentle touch—and it all comes together with an honesty and truthfulness that’s rare to find in any genre these days. One tasteful collection of memorable, honest songs delivered with a flawless, stand-out panache. Here’s an artist you’ll be following for ages to come—check out this album posthaste!" The collaboration between singer-songwriter Brian Rozendal and multi-instrumentalist Bryan Daste (Emma Hill, Scotland Barr & the Slow Drags) began in the summer of 2011 with a simple demo that evolved into an ambitious EP, released digitally in February 2012. After running a successful Kickstarter campaign, they released their first studio album in January 2013 to local critical acclaim. Christian McKee (Wendy and the Lost Boys, The Big North Duo, Toy Trains) joined the band while recording the album, adding mandolin and layered harmonies, and bassist Kyleen King (Swansea, St. Even, Alameda) started playing with the group in late 2013. Small Souls draws from diverse influences in folk, rock, and alt-country to create compelling, dynamic, emotionally honest songs. The band is currently scheduling two west coast tours for September and December 2014 to raise money and support for their second studio album.
